Leaders need to be brave as do children but some might think that to bully is to be brave but it is not. Brave is not to take risks with other peoples feelings and to inflict pain so why do so many of our leaders do this and then pretend that they do it as a brave decision. Just how many bullies do we have in the corporate board room.

or it could be for Brave or Bully The head gasket has gone. The love of her life for my second oldest daughter is a red mini, its deep red, not that bright in your face red. The head gasket has gone. Of course quite a few things have gone over the past months. If it was a pet, it would be close to having had 40% of its body parts replaced. The head gasket is akin to the major valve in the heart being buggered. So she has to decide on a valve replacement or a whole new heart.
She did have a perfect little run around. It drove like a modern car and you could stop in it at a reasonable distance. An old mini (we are not talking about the repro BMW version) is like driving on your arse, it has wheels the size of shirt buttons, it will rattle like a box of bones on a roller coaster. But she loves her mini. Like an old age pensioner she has taken in she will tend them till the very last. She has a detailed care plan that will keep them independent and feeling alive. She brings to her car care the passion she brings to her work. Where she works with vulnerable adults with day to day challenges very few of us experience and would know how to cope with. Like with her little car very few setbacks set her back. It is in some ways her work of art. When it comes to kids and the future, how often do we envisage what they will be like with their cars? I really must try harder. If I am going to take this blogging seriously. I need to set myself a routine. Maybe every morning at nine. Line up the coffee, settle into the old desk chair, the one that has gone dodgy, so it now leans to one side. Add on some layers when its cold because this house never seems to warm up when we get to 2 degree's or lower. In fact as it gets colder and the more layers I put on it gets harder to write as my arms have restricted movement, so that might be a problem. Nine has other challenges, repeats of Frazier followed by undercover boss and that leads me on to something else. While I enjoy, in fact enjoy it a lot more than I expected I find it really odd that these CEO's (what is undercover boss? The head on the company, often some big companies decide to go disguised and work in the frontline to see what it is all about) have not previously taken time to connect to the business in this way. So that got me thinking, why not a page on my blog that explores this thorny issue of leadership and from the question do we have the leaders we deserve, which implies that there is a relationship issue here, that as followers we make choices about what type of person we will follow, get a bad one then maybe thats what you deserved, a good one then you earned that reward. What though about good followers (define?) who get a bad boss (leader?), hwo does that happen and why does it persist. We see this at work all over the world and in all forms of organizations and countries, just look at some of the conflict in the middle east.
I also watched an interesting program on TV (BBC4 - Horizon, UK - go to iplayer and see it on catch up) last night about psychopaths. What really resonated was its interesting conclusions, as it moved from the serial killer to the professor who had the necessary genetic make up of a psychopath but a good enough childhood to inhibit a killer pathway, we ended up with the corporate boss. That one who some how turns their genetic makeup not to killing but to rising higher and higher in the corporate world. Sometimes referred to as a successful psychopath. However when we look closely, while they appear effective in the boardroom, the performance does not support this. There is other emerging research that supports a view that often people get promoted within organizations for analytical and strategic skills, which often underplay what makes for for an effective organization, where people bond together based on empathy and social relatedness. These strategists are frequently disconnected and the higher than get, the less they use the skills and neuro-pathways that support connectedness, they become powerful (or at least occupy positions of authority) and more and more isolated and unable to deploy empathy. The research suggests that they loose this ability if not practiced. There is more, some individuals, rise to the top as they are able to take risks, they innovate in ways that take their organizations into new markets or edge ahead of the competition. There is though a problem, these thrill seekers do not necessary know when to stop and do not always read the danger signals. They need strong individuals around them who can give the feedback. One might say they need strong governments and regulation but of course we do not always get the governments we deserve, assuming we are good citizens. |
