Children do not appear to be yet using worse swear words than in the past — just common swear words more often, according to the new research. Although there are over 70 different common taboo swear words in the English language (some of which also vary from English-speaking country to country), 10 frequently used words account for over 80 percent of common swearing — fuck, shit, hell, damn, goddamn, Jesus Christ, ass, oh my god, bitch and sucks. Fred first sworn when he was about 2 or just older. He was playing on his own with some toys and I was out of eye shot but not ear shot. It was something like "fucking hell" in a frustrated tone. Clearly picked up from somewhere in the house. We have generally been liberal and we are more concerned about tone and the intention of words, they usually deliver more harm.We play him a lot of music and music is big part of our life. Some of this comes with expletives. Would you be shocked to know one of his early favourite songs was " Cockney Thug" by drum and bass legend Rusko. He got hooked on the line " Fuck" which was used rythmically as part of the bass tempo. It introduce him to this music genre, which he still enjoys. Maybe we should have swearing historians or scientists to engage our kids, certainly by teenager years. Poo, willy and farting works well too with little ones. We don't expect him to offend with this liberalism and he is not expected to punctuate all his sentences with fuck or shit. We are though less excitable maybe than some parents when he slips out a profanity. He has learnt that swearing and humour are though joined at the hip so to speak. A recent holiday joke went like this. " Wall-eee, Wall- eee" ( robot character from well known kids film) spoken in a soft calling tone pause " Fuck off " spoken with harsh edge. I am sorry but it had the table in fits of laughter. Of course various attempts after lost the impact.
